Why online therapy?

Even as the COVID-19 pandemic ebbs and flows with respect to safety guidelines, virtual therapy is helpful for minimizing the barriers associated with traditional in-person services.

Benefits to online therapy in

Oregon & Washington:

  • Find a great fit with a therapist, even if they’re not local. Online therapy increases your ability to access a therapist across the state. Maybe you live in a small town where all of the therapists specializing in what you want to work on are booked out for months; now you can simply search another city’s availability for a therapist.

  • Fit therapy into your work day. Many work schedules are flexible enough that people can engage in an hour-long session during the work day, so that they can actually just focus on relaxing when they do get home/are done with the work day.

  • Eliminate your commute. If you hate driving in traffic as much as I do, online therapy is a great way to avoid heavy and unpredictable traffic (and non-guaranteed convenient parking).

  • Accessibility for disability, illness, or chronic pain. From the comfort of your own space, you don’t have to risk spreading or contracting illness or going without items you need for pain management throughout the day.

  • No need to pay for childcare because of a therapy appointment. Many parents and couples are able to attend their appointments online without having to arrange care for their children.

  • The comfort of your home. You might have a pet who is a comforting presence that you couldn’t otherwise bring to a therapy office. You can use all of your own pillows and blankets without worries of germs. And you don’t have to leave the house when it’s down pouring rain and you hardly even want to get out of your pajamas.

You don’t have to sacrifice your mental health because of your busy schedule and personal comfort.

Frequently asked questions about online therapy

FAQs

  • Telehealth existed well before the start of COVID-19. There is a ton of research that shows engaging in therapy through electronic formats (video and phone) can be just as effective as in-person therapy.

That said, telehealth is not for everyone. Those who are in severe crises and or/actively contemplating suicide should seek local, in-person supports.

  • As soon as anything happens online, there is some risk and no guarantee of complete confidentiality.

As a Board Certified Telehealth Professional (BCTP-II), I took extensive training in learning how to adapt in-person approaches to therapy online and taking extra precautions in confidentiality and security concerns.

I do everything on my end to ensure our appointments and your personal health information are kept safe and confidential (using HIPAA-compliant softwares, conducting our appointments in a private and secure space on my end). I can and will walk you through multiple steps of how you can on your end enhance safety and confidentiality practices.

  • You will need access to a desktop/laptop computer, tablet, or phone that has access to video and a microphone; a private and confidential space; and a strong internet connection for video sessions.

One of the most notable differences is that, compared to in-person sessions, we are only seeing parts of each other on camera. This means we might both miss some non-verbals but we can easily compensate for that by sharing more directly things we might be feeling or thinking.
